Perfectly groomed skis are the key to more control, speed and fun on the slopes. But how do you wax properly in alpine sports? Here are the most important steps to keep your skis in top shape – whether for leisure or racing.
1. cleaning the flooring surface
Before you wax, you should clean the base thoroughly. To do this, use a base cleaner or scrape the skis once with a hot wax (so-called “hot scrape”) to remove dirt particles.
2. select wax
The right wax depends on the temperature and consistency of the snow. Rule of thumb:
- Warm wax (yellow packaging and wax color) – wet snow
- Wax for medium temperatures (red packaging and wax color) – moist “snowball” snow
- Cold wax(blue packaging and wax color) – when the snow “crunches” under your shoes
Tip: With a fluorine-free wax such as HWK Racewax, you are not only environmentally friendly, but also achieve top performance.
3. application of the wax
The wax is applied evenly to the base with a waxing iron at the appropriate temperature (exact details on each package). Make sure to keep the iron moving to avoid overheating.
4. allow to cool and peel off
After waxing, the skis should cool down for approx. 15-20 minutes. Then remove excess wax with a Plexi blade.
5. brushing and polishing
Use a steel or bronze hairbrush to thoroughly brush out the base to expose the structure. Finally, you can polish the rubber with a nylon brush to add the finishing touches for speed and precision.
